Fight Malnutrition

According to UNICEF in the Ancash region of Peru where Seeds of Hope is located 1 in 4 children suffer from chronic malnutrition.

How can any child have a decent shot at success if they lack the basic nutrients required to develop strong healthy bodies and minds?

At Seeds, the impact of malnutrition is clear, the children suffer from stunted growth, rotting teeth, weak bones and lack concentration while studying. When I first started working here I was surprised to hear how old some of the kids were because looking at them you'd easily think they were 4-5 years younger.

The daily meals we currently provide include eggs, quinoa (a protein rich grain), oatmeal, cheese and occasionally fruit. While these daily snacks are beneficial, they are not enough to meet the dietary needs of these budding young students. We want to provide the children with other essential food items including red meat, yoghurt, milk and chicken.

In order to achieve this for a 12 month period we need to raise $4000 (US).

That's where you can help.

Support Seeds of Hope in our fight against malnutrition and give 50 Peruvian kids doing it tough, the proteins and vitamins they need to reach their full potential.

HOT OFF THE PRESS - Sally to do a FLASH MOB - February 20
In my experience when fundraising you have to give donors something for their money, besides the warm fuzzy feeling of helping people. With this in mind I have decided that if we are able to raise $4000 US I will do a flash mob yes that's right a flash mob in the middle of Plaza de Armas a very busy park in the centre of Huaraz as my poco embarrassing way of saying thankyou for your very kind and generous support. For those of you who are not familiar with flash mobs this is an impromptu performance, performed in a public place much to the surprise of onlookers.

Plaza de Armas in Huaraz

We're going to raise money for our nutrition project to be sure to be sure - March 14
For St Patrick's Day California Cafe a popular establishment for foreigners here in Huaraz, has generously offered to host an afternoon of all things Irish including pin the hat on the leprechaun, Irish tunes, drinks, food and a raffle with some Irish inspired goodies.

Come and help us raise money so we can provide our 50 impoverished students with the protein rich food they need to reach their full potential.

Falta $690 - April 14
We have witnessed some amazing generosity these last few days. In this last week alone we have received almost $800 worth of donations. I'm very excited to say that we only have $690 US dollars more to raise. Thanks so much to everyone who has gotten behind this very worthwhile cause.

We did it, we raised $4000 US and a little bit more - May 20
After what has been a little over 6 months of emailing, video producing, organising fundraising events and now performing an impromptu dance in front of unsuspecting onlookers - we have done it! We have raised $4065 US ,enough funds to purchase a year's worth of protein rich food to help bolster out daily snack and support our kids in their fight against malnutrition. There is only one more task we need to complete - publish the video of our 'flash mob', so watch this space.....

As promised for your viewing pleasure, our Flash Mob - May 25

Rolling out the Nutrition Project - July 15
I am very excited to report that after much fundraising and planning, this week we have started rolling out our nutrition project. Today we enriched our Quaker oats with protein rich milk and tomorrow we will provide yoghurt in addition to the kids' usual daily snack. Friday is set to be a winner with beef patty sandwiches jammed packed full of protein.

Apart from gaining greater access to protein rich food, education is another essential element not to be overlooked in our nutrition campaign. That being said one of our current volunteers Caleb is currently planning a series of nutrition and sports workshops to highlight the importance of nutrition, how to access nutritious food and other ways to stay fit and healthy through physical activity.

First Week was a success - July 22
We are pleased to report that the first week of our nutrition project was a raging success. The students loved all of our new editions to their daily snack. Especially the yogurt and meat sandwiches. More photos

Healthy or not healthy? (¿saludable or no saludable?) - August 6
As part of our nutrition program we have been encouraging our students to make healthy and informed food choices.

Recent our legendary volunteers Caleb Cummins and Amber Reynolds put on a great 'Doctor Seeds' TV Show for the students to highlight examples of healthy and unhealthy food choices.

Test out your spanish and see if you can pick what food belongs in Garfield's stomach or the stomach of a Peruvian football player.
